Department of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Computer Science

Welcome to the Department of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Computer Science

Students who are interested in our majors will find a diverse curriculum, opportunities for research and faculty who want to engage with their students in and out of the classroom. Our department offers a B.S. in Biology with unique course offerings ranging from organismal biology to cellular biology. In addition to the excellent course diversity in our biology curriculum, UM students have the opportunity to take marine biology courses at Dauphin Island Sea Lab on the Alabama coast for credit at UM. Our department offers B.S. and ACS-certified B.S. degrees in Chemistry. The ACS-certified degree is the most prestigious B.S. degree in chemistry offered at any institution. We also provide pre-professional programs for biology and chemistry majors pursuing admission into medical, dental, veterinarian, pharmacy and optometry schools. Our department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Mathematics, along with a pre-engineering track for those seeking to continue their studies in the engineering sciences. Within the mathematics program, we offer two tracks focusing on the abstract nature of mathematics and applied mathematics. Regardless of the degree type or track therein, you are guaranteed wide exposure to various areas of mathematical work.

In addition to our four majors in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, we offer courses in both Physics and Geology. Finally, many of our majors are attracted to Montevallo’s interdisciplinary minors in Game Studies and Design and Environmental Studies, as well as to minors offered in Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Take a few minutes to look around and discover which discipline is right for you.
